Man charged with murder of 88-year-old woman
Published: 19th May 2010 00:32:19
A man has been charged with the murder of an 88-year-old great-grandmother who was beaten and stabbed to death in her south-east London flat.
Irene Barrett was found dead in her ransacked flat in Valiant House, Sam Bartram Close, Charlton on Saturday.
The Metropolitan Police said 33-year-old Daniel Franklin, of Felixstowe Road, Abbeywood, south-east London, had been charged with her murder.
He is due to appear before Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
A woman was arrested in connection with the investigation on Tuesday night and is currently in custody at a south London police station.
A man and a woman, aged 34 and 32, were arrested on Sunday but later eliminated from the inquiry.
Mrs Barrett, a retired secretary, had a son, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She had lived alone in the 15th-floor flat for the past 20 years.
A post-mortem examination found she died from multiple stab wounds.
