Warwickshire holidaymakers rescued in Cornwall
Published: 27th Mar 2010 18:26:58
Two Warwickshire holidaymakers have been winched to safety after getting cut off by the tide while going for a walk on a beach in west Cornwall.
The man and woman, from Rugby, were rescued from Tolcarne Point at Lamorna Cove when a hotel guest raised the alarm after spotting them waving a bag.
Falmouth Coastguards co-ordinated the rescue and diverted a RNAS Culdrose helicopter which was out on exercise.
RNLI lifeboats from Newquay were also scrambled in the rescue at 1300 GMT.
A spokesman for Falmouth Coastguard said: "The man and woman had gone for a walk and had got cut off by the tide.
"Fortunately they were spotted by a guest at the Great Western Hotel who saw them waving an orange bag as they stood on rocks surrounded by water.
"The guest raised the alarm and we were able to divert a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose which was out on training exercises.
"The helicopter arrived just in time as the sea was quite rough and waves were breaking over the couples' heads.
"They were winched up to the top of the cliff where Newquay coastguard team checked them out and drove them to their hotel."
