Evacuation after tower block fire
Published: 10th Mar 2010 10:08:10
Several flats have been evacuated after a fire at a 12-storey tower block in the west end of Glasgow.
Emergency services were called to an 11th floor flat at Keal Drive, in Blairdardie, at about 0750 GMT.
Residents were removed from the 11th and 12th floors. Temporary shelter is being set up at the nearby Blairdrum Neighbourhood Centre.
The occupier of the 11th floor flat - a 33-year-old man - was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital.
No-one else at the scene required treatment.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the blaze was "extremely well developed" by the time crews arrived on the scene.
Firefighters entered the flat and managed to extinguished the fire before it spread to the upper floor of the building.
The 33-year-old occupier managed to get out of the flat prior to the arrival of fire crews.
The tower block is believed to contain 72 flats. It was built in the 1960s and refurbished in 2007 by Glasgow Housing Association.
The association's acting director of housing and customer services, Alex McGuire, said: "We are doing everything possible to help the families who are affected by the fire.
"Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police are at the scene.
"A number of tenants on the 11th and 12th floor are currently unable to return to their homes.
"We are looking after these families and will do everything we can to ensure their comfort and well-being until they are allowed back into their homes."
