Liverpool children try out sports at festival
Published: 22nd Jan 2012 18:37:45
Hundreds of children in Liverpool got a taste of the London Olympics at special sports festival.
The Festival of Olympic Sports at Liverpool's Echo Arena gave youngsters the chance to try out sports from karate and volleyball to golf.
They also got advice from Liverpool Olympians including high jumper Steve Smith, swimmer Stephen Parry and gymnast Beth Tweddle.
The festival featured exhibitions, demonstrations and taster sports.
It was organised by Liverpool City Council (LCC) in partnership with Echo Arena and Liverpool Primary Care Trust.
The aim was to toast the Olympic Games in the city and celebrate sporting excellence and grassroots participation as well as promoting health and well being.
LCC's cabinet member for leisure, Wendy Simon, said: "Liverpool is a city with sport running through its veins and this was a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to get involved in an activity and hopefully become a future Olympic gold medallist."
