A 35-year-old Derry man has been jailed for five months for a series of assaults on the police.

Londonderry Magistrates Court was told that Terence Edward Doherty, from Chamberlain Street, kicked and spat at police officers at Barr's Lane earlier this month.

The court was also told that Doherty shouted abuse and swore at the PSNI in front of a group of around 20 children.

He was also charged with resisting the police and disorderly behaviour.

The District Judge, Barney McElholm, said the defendant "steadfastly refused" to address his alcohol problems.

He also said that swearing in front of a group of children "was no example in this day and age."
