Ali Jawaid dies a week after robbery in Coventry

A man who was robbed and assaulted outside a shop in Coventry a week ago has died.

Ali Jawaid, from Ward End, Birmingham, had been in an induced coma since being hit over the head with a metal bar.

The attack happened outside a mobile phone shop in Sewell Highway at about 18:30 GMT on 9 November.

The 43-year-old father-of-two's condition worsened and he died on Tuesday afternoon. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police said Mr Jawaid's red Toyota Hiace van had been spotted driving away along Torcross Avenue moments after he was attacked.

It was later found burnt out in Warwickshire.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday a 25-year-old man, from the Bell Green area of Coventry, had been arrested and on Wednesday another 25-year-old man from the Stoke area of the city had been arrested at an address in Leicestershire.

Police will patrol the scene of the robbery, one week on from the attack, and speak to passers-by and motorists in the hope they can help with the investigation.

Det Ch Insp Matt Markham said: "Mr Jawaid was a married father of two young children who was going about his business when he was viciously attacked by a group of men; all for just a few mobile phones.

"His family have suffered terribly over the last week, staying at his bedside praying he would pull through, and sadly he passed away yesterday.

"We have very strong lines of inquiry that we are following up but I'd appeal to anyone who has any information about this tragic incident to contact us immediately."

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Wednesday but the precise cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
