St Agnes teenager Annie Thomas rescued during storm search

More than 80 people were involved in the rescue of a girl whose disappearance sparked a major search.

Annie Thomas, 13, went missing during a storm near St Agnes, Cornwall on Monday afternoon.

Police said Annie was found with a head injury, more than seven hours after going out for a walk with the family dog, at about 16:00 BST.

Paramedics believe the teenager would not have survived the night had she not been found.

Cornwall Search and Rescue team said it was the "most challenging incident they had been involved in".

A rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose started the search along with police, coastguard teams, the Cornwall Search and Rescue Team and an ambulance crew.

Rescuers described the conditions as "treacherous".

Jim Galienne, the team leader of Cornwall Search & Rescue said: "The weather was horrendous. It was a very difficult search in those conditions.

"The girl had slipped down an embankment. Our team members were calling out and heard her scream back. We located her and stabilised her injuries.

"Another few hours out in that weather the outcome could have been tragic."

Annie was later taken to hospital for treatment, where she was reunited with her parents.
