Torrential rain causes flooding across UK

Torrential rain has caused flooding in south-west England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Scarborough in North Yorkshire, saying winds could cause problems in the early hours of Tuesday.

The warning means flooding is expected, and "immediate action required" by homeowners and businesses.

In Wales, it has issued a flood warning for the Western Cleddau river at Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire.

The agency expects to issue further warnings for other parts of England and Wales in the next few hours.

In south-west England, Torquay seafront has been shut to traffic. Torre Abbey, Livermead and Meadfoot Sea Road in Torbay are also closed.

The Met Office is warning that some areas of Devon and Cornwall could have as much as 150mm (5.9in) of rain by the end of Monday.

The worst hit areas of Northern Ireland include north and west Belfast, Ballyclare and Cushendall.

In Antrim, floodwater caused some damage to a care home on Station Road on Sunday afternoon.

Police warned drivers in Ards, north Down, Castlereagh and Downpatrick to take care on the roads on Monday, due to the severe weather.

Environment minister Alex Attwood has pledged to help people whose homes are flooded.

In Wales, incidents of flooding around Pembrokeshire were reported throughout the day on Monday, with Treffgarne and Wolfscastle among the worst affected areas.

An amber alert has been issued for that county, with up to 100mm (about 4in) of rain predicted by the end of Monday.

Environment Agency Wales said some streams and rivers could burst their banks in localised downpours, adding that drainage systems may not be able to cope.

Spokesman Curig Jones told BBC Radio Wales: "We do ask that people take care when they're out and about - if they do see any flooding on the roads, not to walk or drive on them as they could be dangerous."

Further flooding risks

The Environment Agency said flood warnings were likely for rivers and coastal areas in Cornwall, Devon, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Swansea.

A spokeswoman said: "There have been some reports of flooding to property and continued disruption to travel is possible.

"Given the potential for very heavy localised downpours, small, fast responding rivers and streams are particularly prone to flooding, especially in Cornwall and West Devon.

"Strong winds and high tides in South Devon are also increasing the risk of localised flooding in coastal areas. Some precautionary closures of roads have been organised by local authorities."

Scottish Environment Protection agency has issued two flood alerts in Tayside and Dundee and Angus.
