A teenager is critically ill in hospital after being hit by a marked police van.

The 13-year-old boy was struck by the vehicle as it responded to an incident in Swinton, Salford on Saturday (October 1st).

As a result, the teen – who has not yet been named – sustained a head injury and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "The boy suffered a head injury, was taken to hospital by ambulance and remains there in a critical condition. Officers from the forensic collision reconstruction unit are examining the scene and GMP's professional standards branch are aware and have informed the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission)."

Ian Wiggett, assistant chief constable at GMP, offered his sympathies to the family and added that a full investiagation will be carried out.

The incident occurred on Chorley Road at around 18:20 BST, as the driver responded to a disturbance in Little Hulton, around nine miles from Manchester centre.

Police confirmed that the officer in charge of the vehicle has been suspended from driving duties while an inquiry is carried out.
