Two hurt in explosions near Crewe railway station
Published: 28th Sep 2011 22:55:13
A man and a woman have been injured after a series of small explosions near Crewe railway station, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
Manhole covers were blown off in the incident on Nantwich Road. The injured pair have been taken to hospital suffering from burns.
A faulty underground electrical cable is believed to have caused the blasts.
The station was closed for a time but a Virgin Trains spokesman said it had since reopened.
North West Ambulance Service said the two people were injured near the station on Nantwich Road. The road has been closed.
The man and woman were being treated for minor arm and facial injuries at Crewe Hospital, the service said.
"They were not taken on standby or courtesy which indicates that they sustained minor injuries," it added.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "The cause is not yet established but it is believed it may have been a combination of gas and electric underground cables.
"Emergency services are there making it safe."
Cheshire Police said nearby Gresty Road was also closed.
"At this time police have no information to suggest anything suspicious has happened and are working with British Transport Police and utility companies to establish the cause," a spokesman said.
A Virgin Trains spokesman said they were given the all-clear by police to reopen the station at about 21:20 BST.
"We are unable to allow passengers to leave the station on the west side as Nantwich Road is closed on that side, but they can leave the station on the other side," the spokesman added.
A statement on National Rail Enquiries website at about 22:00 BST said: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident at Crewe.
"Because of this, journeys through Crewe may be delayed by up to 60 minutes.
"These delays will continue until approximately 23:30."
