A canoe instructor who was leading a group of students has died after his canoe capsized in Cumbria.

The Darlington man, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, capsized on the River Eden near Yanwath Hall, Penrith, on Sunday afternoon.

A male student, 14, from Manchester, was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary with non life-threatening injuries.

He was in a party of 11 pupils from the Manchester area. The other children were all unharmed.

Four other instructors on the trip were also unhurt.

The parents of the students are being contacted and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

The man died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle, where he was taken after capsizing at about 12:40 BST.
