Man dead and police officer hurt in Tottenham shooting
Published: 4th Aug 2011 20:58:57
A man has been shot dead and a police officer injured in north London, Scotland Yard said.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been called in to investigate the shooting at 18:15 BST.
The IPCC said it understood the dead man had been shot by police in Ferry Lane, Tottenham Hale.
An IPCC spokesman said the incident had been referred to the IPCC by the Metropolitan Police professional standards department.
The spokesman added: "We understand the officer was shot first before the male was shot."
But he said the IPCC was not certain who fired the shots first.
He said independent investigators had been deployed to the scene.
The Metropolitan Police would not confirm if the dead man had been shot by a police officer.
A Scotland Yard spokesman added: "One male was pronounced dead at the scene and one officer was taken to hospital."
A waitress at the Ferry Boat Inn, who did not wish to be named, said the incident happened a few minutes walk from Tottenham Hale Tube station.
She said: "One man came in and he said that he saw police trying to pull some clothes off a man who was bleeding."
Another worker said there were "lots of cars" around the scene.
