Huddersfield fire victims' memorial unveiled
Published: 6th Feb 2010 13:19:21
A memorial to eight members of a Huddersfield family killed in a fire in 2002 has been unveiled in the town.
Nafeesa Aziz, 35, and her five daughters died in the arson attack. Her brother and mother were also killed.
The stone memorial outside the town's St John's Church has been created by Huddersfield sculptor Mike Disley.
A short service was held outside the church on Saturday. Family member Muhammad Shafique said it was a fitting tribute to his loved ones.
The memorial is in the shape of a tree, with eight gold branches representing the victims.
Mr Shafique said: "This memorial means a lot to us. It is a lasting tribute to our family."
Prayers for the family were said during the service.
The leader of Kirklees Council, Mehboob Khan said: "The fire was one of the darkest days in the history of this town, but we could see that one of the positives of it was that there was going to be a very strong community spirit."
Three men were jailed in 2003 after a trial at Leeds Crown Court heard they threw petrol bombs at the house.
Another man police want to speak to in connection with the attack was thought to have fled to Pakistan. He is now believed to be back in the UK.
