A 14-year-old boy has died after falling into a river near Carmarthen.

Emergency services were called to the scene about a mile downstream from the village of Capel Dewi at 1730 BST on Monday.

He was swept away by strong currents and following an extensive search his body was pulled from a deep pool about an hour later.

He was flown by air ambulance to Morriston Hospital in Swansea but died during the early hours of Tuesday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the boy was local.

The search involved police and ambulance helicopters, two fire brigade boats and coastguards.

Insp Eric Evans said: "Following an extensive search the boy was seen submerged in a deep pool.

"Fire officers, who were already in the water, managed to pull him out to the waiting paramedics and the ambulance helicopter.

"The boy was flown immediately to Morriston Hospital.

"Despite the attempts of staff at the hospital, he died in the early hours of this morning."

The coroner has been informed.
