A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a South African tourist in York was repeatedly struck on the head with a rock.

The incident took place at about 2030 BST on Friday in the Minster Yard area. A 43-year-old was later arrested.

The 78-year-old tourist was struck on the head repeatedly with a rock or cobble before members of the public called for emergency services.

He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to York District Hospital.

His injuries were not thought to be life threatening and he has since been released from hospital.

North Yorkshire Police have made an appeal for witnesses.

Det Insp Ian Dyer said: "This appears to be an unprovoked attack on an elderly man who was enjoying a evening of sightseeing in York.

"The victim is a tourist and is unfamiliar with York place names.

"Therefore police are appealing for anyone who saw anything untoward in the Minster or Minster Yard or Deans Park area, or anyone who witnessed the actual assault to come forward, if they have not already spoken to police."
