Residents vote on Upper Denbigh park £20,000 revamp

Residents are to vote on ideas about how to spend £20,000 on children's play facilities in a Denbighshire town.

Householders in Upper Denbigh tabled their own bids which were shortlisted ahead of Thursday evening's vote.

The project is called Participatory Budgeting (PB) which is being used as a way for the public to decide on council spending.

Denbighshire council used the scheme last year to decide how to use £100,000 to revamp Ruthin's Cae Ddol park.

Earlier in June, Colwyn Bay Town Council received 37 applications for its first PB project to create a calendar of events with £60,000 up for grabs.

Bill Ellis-Jones, programme manager for The Wales PB Unit, said the schemes actively encouraged communities to get involved throughout the process, from identifying local needs to delivery of ideas and solutions.

In Denbigh, he said the idea was to create the best play facilities for older children with limited funds.

He said residents who joined a local working group to tackle the issue had perceived that a current play area is designed primarily for use by pre-school and nursery-age children.

Among the ideas being voted on at Denbigh Town Hall are a zip wire, climbing wall and adventure trail.

The money is being provided by Denbighshire Council, Denbigh Town Council and Denbigh Round Table, among others.
