A man suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed with a machete in Manchester.

The 35-year-old is in a serious condition in hospital following the attack at Shortwood Close, Newton Heath, at about 13:30 BST on Thursday.

He has stab wounds to his head, hand and arm.

Police said they believed it was a targeted attack but are not linking it with a fatal shooting in the area on 10 August.

Ch Insp Sarah Jones said: "We would like to reassure residents that we do not believe this was a random attack and they should not be overly alarmed.

"We do not believe that this incident is connected in any way to the death of David Short last week."

Greater Manchester Police said additional patrols were in place in the area.

Mr Short, 46, was found dead in Folkestone Road East, Clayton.

A post-mortem examination concluded Mr Short died from multiple gunshot wounds and an explosion injury.

His son Mark Short, 23, died when a masked gunman opened fire at Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden, on 25 May.
