Two people are believed to have died when a light aircraft crashed near Chester, Cheshire Police have said.

The aircraft with two men on board came down on farmland near the village of Churton.

Police said staff at Hawarden Airport in north Wales reported the plane as missing at 20:55 BST.

A search was launched and the wreckage was spotted by a police helicopter. Emergency services are at the scene.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two fire engines from Chester went to the scene and on arrival crews found a two-seater plane had crashed into a field.

"Police and paramedics were also on the scene and firefighters assisted them in gaining access to the aircraft which contained two men."

North West Ambulance Service said it sent an ambulance and two rapid response vehicles to Chapel Lane but they were not used.
