Pipers gather for The Worlds in Glasgow

Thousands of pipers and drummers have descended on Glasgow for the annual World Pipe Band Championships.

The event, held in Glasgow Green, will see 235 bands from across the globe compete to be named the world's best.

Qualifiers for the event are held during the morning, with the finals taking place in the afternoon.

The World Pipe Band Championships, nicknamed "The Worlds", have been associated with Glasgow for more than 60 years.

Ian Embelton, chief executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, said: "We have had some outstanding championships in recent years and I know the bands love coming to Glasgow Green every year to compete.

"There is nothing to match the sights and sounds of The Worlds and there is something for everyone to enjoy."

Paul Bush, chief operating officer for EventScotland, said: "Piping Live! and The World Pipe Band Championships are two world-class events that position Glasgow at the centre of the global piping community every August, while attracting thousands of visitors to the city.

"Scotland is the perfect stage for events and it is fitting that we continue to host these two wonderful international events, which truly showcase Scotland's heritage and cultural offering."
