Rail services in and out of Cardiff on Valley Line services are set to be disrupted until further notice following a landslide on the track.

Network Rail said engineering work on a collapsed retaining wall starting this weekend will continue into next week.

The landslide between Cardiff's Queen Street and Cardiff Central stations will affect services to Treherbert, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare, and Rhymney.

The wall collapse spilled five tonnes of earth between both lines.

Network Rail said:

It also said some mainline services may also be disrupted.

Arriva Trains Wales advised customers to check travel updates before travelling and to allow additional journey time.

Arriva Trains Wales commercial director Mike Bagshaw said: "Our primary concern is to ensure that this regrettable situation is resolved as quickly as possible with the least disruption possible to our customers.

"Arriva Trains Wales is working closely with Network Rail who are leading the effort to repair the line, however during this time there will be unavoidable disruption to local train services and every effort is being made to minimise the inconvenience to our customers."

Fans travelling to the Millennium Stadium for the Olympic Games bronze medal football match on Friday evening were warned they could be affected.

But a spokesman said the operation went "very smoothly" with no reported problems at all, despite the late change to plans caused by the collapsed wall.
