A woman has been describing the moment when she was hit by a hammer thrown at the Skye Games.

Marion MacKenzie, 47, was struck after the stray hammer flew into the Highland dancing tent as she sat near the judges' table.

The 8lb hammer hit her on the left side of her body as she was assisting the judges in the dancing competitions.

Mrs MacKenzie told BBC Radio Scotland she was shocked and "didn't know what had happened at all".

I just saw this big black thing coming towards me and it's hit me on the side and threw me off my chair”

She said the area used for the Games - The Meall, Portree - is too small to be safe for hammer throwing to take place at the same time as other events.

Mrs MacKenzie told the Newsdrive programme: "We were just taking a break and I was just bending down to pick my handbag up to take a drink of juice and put my juice on the table and put my bag down.

"I just saw this big black thing coming towards me and it's hit me on the side and threw me off my chair."

Mrs MacKenzie was taken to Broadford Hospital on Skye for observation. Although she appears to have suffered no lasting harm, she said the incident should prompt a review of how the hammer-throwing is staged.

She added: "It's far too small an area to have all these events going on at the same time.

"There's so much more people there now and the guys themselves are a lot stronger."
