He has stormed to victory in both the 100m and 200m Olympic finals, a flash of record-breaking yellow on the running track.

But the woman behind sprinting superstar Usain Bolt's bright Jamaican kit is not a native of the Caribbean country - she is Welsh.

Ffion Appleton from Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, was chosen to design the yellow and green kit after applying for a job she spotted in a trade magazine.

She said it reflected Jamaican culture.

After being selected to design the Puma kits for Bolt and the rest of the Jamaican team, Ms Appleton said she was given a clear brief as to what was needed.

"They wanted the look to be very much grounded in Jamaican culture so they wanted something quite playful, something unexpected," she said.

"So from my side the product has bold colour-blocking so it's quite distinctive on the track.

If you see it, it just looks like Jamaica, the art you associate with Jamaica”

"It's all based on Jamaican culture and music."

She added: "If you see it, it just looks like Jamaica, the art you associate with Jamaica."

The music of the Caribbean country was also considered important to reflect in the design of kit.

Ms Appleton, who is a freelance designer, said: "They asked Bob Marley's daughter to do the graphics which shows the music of Jamaica."

Ms Appleton added that she had been cheering on the sprinter during his races.

"I was supporting Usain Bolt I have to say," she said.

"I think a lot of people even from the UK were supporting Usain as well. He's such a character."

Bolt won the men's 100m final on Sunday in 9.63 seconds - a new Olympic record and the second fastest run of all time. He also holds the world record.

He then went on to win the London 2012 200m final in 19.32 seconds.

His Jamaican team mate Yohan Blake came second in both races.

Bolt is the first man to defend the Olympic 100m and 200m sprint titles, after he won both events in Beijing in 2008.
