A teenager is being treated in hospital for hypothermia after he fell from his kayak and was found clinging to a buoy in Rhyl harbour in Denbighshire.

A fishing boat skipper heard the 14-year-old's shouts for help and alerted the coastguard at 04:00 BST on Tuesday.

Rhyl's RNLI lifeboat crew found the teenager had been clinging to the buoy for 20 minutes.

The boy, who had been camping nearby, was taken to hospital with severe hypothermia.

Rhyl RNLI coxswain Martin Jones said: "This teenager was a very lucky person.

"If the skipper of the fishing boat had not been on scene, there could have been a very different outcome.

"The skipper is to be congratulated on his speedy calling of the emergency services."

The skipper heard the shouts coming from near the Blue Bridge and called Holyhead Coastguard on his radio.

The boy is being treated at nearby Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in Bodelwyddan.
