Prestwich, Whitefield and Swinton flood clean up
Published: 6th Aug 2012 08:43:39
Residents in Greater Manchester are cleaning up after flash flooding caused damage to a number of properties.
Heavy rain on Sunday caused flooding in Prestwich, Whitefield and Swinton and left around 100 homes damaged.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's Tony Lander said firefighters had rescued people from several houses and a "partly submerged car".
The service had "over 100 calls from residents struggling with the rising flood waters", he said.
The torrential rain also caused a section of the M60 motorway to be shut for a brief time.
Mr Lander said the service had been made aware of the flooding at around 17:00 BST and had sent crews and appliances, including an inshore rescue boat, to the areas.
Once the rain stopped, flood water had "started to subside after three or four hours", Mr Lander said.
"This morning people are cleaning up their properties and getting them dried out."
