The driver and four passengers of a silver or white hatchback vehicle have been urged to come forward following a serious assault in Surrey.

A 39-year-old man suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked as he left the Guilfest music festival with his family on Friday evening.

Police said he gestured for a motorist to stop in Kings Road, Guildford, to let his wife and young child cross.

A passenger in the vehicle jumped out and head-butted and punched him.

The victim was taken to St George's Hospital in south London where his condition is critical.

Surrey Police said they were also keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle driving erratically in the Kings Road area.

The attack took place between 18:30 and 18:45 BST.

The offender was described as a white man, possibly with tanned skin, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, and between 5ft 10in and 6ft 2in tall.

He was of a medium/muscular build, with short dark hair and was wearing a light coloured top and dark trousers.

Det Sgt Anna Leahy said: "The man was on a family day out with his wife and 16-month-old child and he was only trying to get them safely across the road when he was attacked."
