Florence scores first UK number one single
Published: 15th Jul 2012 19:02:09
British band Florence + The Machine have scored their first UK number one single with Spectrum (Say My Name).
But singer Florence Welch may have to celebrate quietly following the vocal injury that forced her to pull out of two European festivals this weekend.
The 25-year-old had been due to perform with her band at Spain's Benicassim and Optimus Alive in Portugal but withdrew on doctors orders earlier this week.
Britain's Newton Faulkner tops the album chart with Write It On Your Skin.
Florence + The Machine previously came close to the top spot with a cover of 1986 hit You've Got The Love, which reached number five in 2009.
The following year a reworking of the song by rapper Dizzee Rascal, entitled You Got The Dirtee Love, reached the number two spot.
Remixed by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and promoted with a video co-directed by US photographer David LaChapelle, Spectrum is taken from Florence + The Machine's second album Ceremonials.
The song's success came at the expense of last week's number one, Payphone by Maroon 5, which fell to two.
Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am remains at number three with This Is Love, while Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up falls two places to four.
Brown's album Fortune, which topped the album chart last week, also took a tumble, falling four places to fifth place in this week's rundown.
Singer-songwriter Faulkner said he had been "completely blown away by the response" to his third album.
His 2007 debut, Hand Built By Robots, also reached the top spot.
Rapper Frank Ocean, a member of US hip-hop collective Odd Future, is a new entry at two with his first solo album, Channel Orange.
Maroon 5 are at three with their record Overexposed, while English singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas has a new entry at four with her debut release, Is Your Love Big Enough?
