An 84-year-old man has suffered an eye injury after trying to tackle a sneak-in thief who had broken into his home.

The incident happened at about 13:00 on Friday in the Woodfarm area of Glasgow.

The pensioner was cutting his grass at the side of his home on Woodside Avenue when a neighbour told him a man had gone into his house.

They went into the house and tried to restrain the thief but he broke free, injuring the 84-year-old and making off with his wallet.

The elderly man was taken to the city's Victoria Infirmary where he was given stitches for his eye injury.

The intruder was last seen in High Park heading towards Main Street, Thornliebank.

He is described as white, in his 20s, 6ft tall and of slim build. He was wearing a light coloured jacket and light blue jeans.

Det Con Justine Murray said: "This was a sickening experience for an elderly man who bravely tried to capture the sneak-in thief.

"Unfortunately he has been left not only traumatised but also with a nasty injury to his upper eyelid.

"I'd like to speak to anyone who was in the Woodside Avenue vicinity on Friday 13 July around lunchtime and may have seen the suspect hanging around the area or anyone who may have seen him running away from the house towards High Park."
