Review after man evades police at Manchester Airport

An investigation has begun into how a suspected armed robber managed to evade police waiting for him at Manchester airport.

Anthony Morrison, 32, flew in from Amsterdam on 6 July but fled after entering a secure baggage area at the airport's Terminal 3.

He was aware police wanted to speak to him about a robbery in Oldham in 2011.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing to find the man and a review is under way."

It is understood Mr Morrison flew in to Manchester without a police escort and was due to meet officers at the airport's immigration control.

Manchester Airport called the matter an "ongoing investigation".

The UK Border Force said as the matter was being investigated, it would be "inappropriate to comment".

In 2010, The UK Border Agency's (UKBA) independent chief inspector John Vine said they found two areas where there was "potential for international passengers transferring between terminals to be able to walk out of the airport without passing through primary control points."

Manchester Airport said the issues raised had been addressed by the UKBA.

In April 2012, passengers from three international flights which landed at Manchester Airport did not have their passports checked.

Up to 100 passengers from Amsterdam, Brussels and Antwerp missed immigration checks when they were sent down the domestic arrivals channel by mistake.

The airport said it was a mistake by handling agents in Terminal 3, and not UK Border Agency staff.
