Two men jailed after violent tram

Two men have been jailed over a violent attack on a Greater Manchester tram that left a woman with a fractured eye socket.

CCTV footage shown to Bolton Crown Court showed Melody McDermott being headbutted and stamped on in October.

Kenneth Kelsall, 47, of Cornwood Close, Cheetham Hill, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.

Gareth Farrar, 43, of Ellingham Close, Beswick, received a sentence of two years and two months in prison.

Both admitted at an earlier hearing to attacking Ms McDermott and a friend.

Sentencing, Judge Elliot Knopf said: "This was an explosion of violence against two young people. The CCTV recording speaks for itself."

Ms McDermott, 22, of Whitefield, said she suffered permanent damage in the attack, with continuing pain in her face and problems with her teeth.

Her friend Stephen Stafford, 30, was also injured.

Speaking outside the court earlier, she added: "I'm pleased they've got a lengthy sentence, I definitely feel safer now.

"For a while I was experiencing panic attacks when getting on a crowded Metro at night."

Kelsall pleaded guilty to charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and grievous bodily harm.

Farrar admitted charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.
