Edinburgh trams: Princes Street reopens to buses and taxis
Published: 30th Jun 2012 00:38:58
Edinburgh's Princes Street is to reopen to taxis and buses following tram works.
The city's main shopping street had been shut to traffic while workmen dug up and relayed tram tracks.
Some traders had complained of a fall in revenues while the famous thoroughfare was closed.
It is the first stage of tramworks to be completed since Edinburgh Council resumed control of the project from the disbanded trams company TIE.
Princes Street was due to open west of Waverley Bridge on Saturday morning, when The Mound was also to reopen to all vehicles.
But the re-opening of Princes Street will not mean an end to traffic disruption in the capital, with the closure of York Place expected to lead to further significant delays over the coming months.
York Place is due to close to all vehicles except buses from 14 July, before shutting completely to traffic from September until the end of 2013.
