Tom Maynard death: Family look at setting up trust fund

The family of Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard say they are interested in setting up a trust fund in his memory.

The Cardiff-born 23-year-old was hit by a London Underground train in Wimbledon last Monday.

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned and his funeral will be held at Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff, on 4 July.

Maynard's parents Matthew and Sue and sister Ceri said they were grateful for the "outpouring" of support.

In a statement, the family said they had received "hundreds" of cards, letters and messages over the last week and that the scale of support had been "of real comfort" to them.

"Over the last few days the idea of setting up a trust fund in memory of Tom has been suggested and this is something that the family is interested in developing," the statement said.

"An announcement on this will be made in due course.

"However, it is understood that if anyone would like to make a donation they can do so by sending a cheque, made payable to 'The Tom Maynard Trust', c/o Jon Rees, Carston Accountants, Tudor House, 16 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9LJ."

Tom Maynard's father Matthew, 46, was a former Glamorgan and England cricketer, and is a coach.

The statement added: "This is an incredibly difficult time for Matthew, Sue, Ceri and other members of the family but they want people to know just how grateful they are for the outpouring of support for their beloved Tom."

Maynard's funeral will take place at Llandaff Cathedral (12:00 BST) and Thornhill crematorium (13.15 BST) which the family say will be open to all who want to attend.

The family have requested that there be no flowers at either of the services, with donations instead to the Professional Cricketers' Association Benevolent Fund (c/o The Laker Stand, Kia Oval, Kennington, London SE11 5SS).

The after-service at Pentyrch RFC will be open only to friends, who are also being encouraged to bring personal photographs to contribute to a photo montage.

An inquest into Maynard's death was opened and adjourned last Friday at Westminster Coroner's Court.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe said "extensive investigations" were continuing into Maynard's death.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has referred the case surrounding Maynard to Scotland Yard.

The Metropolitan Police said a man matching his description ran away after a car being driven "erratically" was stopped about 50 minutes earlier.

The IPCC referred it back to the Met because pursuing officers had lost sight of the man.

Maynard's death, which is not being treated as suspicious, was announced a day after he played for his county in the t20 game against Kent.

The inquest was adjourned until 24 September.
