Police are treating the death of a man who was attacked in a Greater Manchester street and died three days later as murder.

Francis Farrell, 56, was found with head injuries at about 04:15 BST on 17 June in Frog Lane, Wigan. He died in hospital three days later.

In a statement, his family described him as a good son, brother and uncle who "kept himself to himself".

A 35-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault has been bailed.

Mr Farrell was seen leaving the Wiend Bar in the town centre at about 03:50 BST and then spotted on CCTV walking down Frog Lane a few minutes later.

His family said: "Francis lived his life how he wished and would cause no harm to anyone.

"We as a family cannot understand why this tragedy has happened, if anyone has any information big or small please come forward to give our family closure."

Det Ch Insp Joanne Rawlinson, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "He was attacked while minding his own business on his way home after enjoying an evening out in Wigan town centre.

"Whoever is responsible left him injured, unconscious and lying half in the road on Frog Lane."

She added: "From CCTV it is clear that there were a number of vehicles and pedestrians on the area at the time and I would really like to speak to them."
