A teenage violinist who was invited to play with Nicola Benedetti has been left in "considerable distress" after the theft of her instrument.

The violin was stolen during a break-in at the girl's family home in Dalry, North Ayrshire, at the weekend.

A number of other items were taken and some family belongings were damaged.

Police said the instrument was of great sentimental value to its owner. They have asked anyone who may know of its whereabouts to contact them.

The break-in happened sometime between Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April.

Sgt Iain Oliphant, from Strathclyde Police, said: "Thankfully, no-one was injured in the incident but the theft of this violin has caused considerable distress to the young owner.

"She has had the violin for several years and is a self-taught violinist. She plays various festivals and in 2010 was invited to play with Nicola Benedetti during a national tour. It therefore means a great deal to the owner.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have information regarding the housebreaking or the whereabouts of the violin to get in touch with us."
