An inquest into the death of Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard has been opened and adjourned at Westminster Coroner's Court.

The Cardiff-born 23-year-old was hit by a London Underground train in Wimbledon on Monday.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe said "extensive investigations" were continuing into Maynard's death.

His family did not attend the hearing. His funeral will be held at Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff on 4 July.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has referred the case surrounding Maynard to Scotland Yard.

The Metropolitan Police said a man matching his description ran away after a car being driven "erratically" was stopped about 50 minutes earlier.

The IPCC referred it back to the Met because pursuing officers had lost sight of the man.

Maynard's death, which is not being treated as suspicious, was announced a day after he played for his county in the t20 game against Kent.

The inquest was adjourned until 24 September.

His funeral will be held at Cardiff's Llandaff Cathedral at 12:00 BST on Wednesday 4 July followed by a service at Thornhill Crematorium at 13:15 BST.

His family are encouraging people who plan to attend the wake to bring along their own personal photos of him, so a montage can be compiled.
