Investigations are continuing into the death of a 14-year-old boy after he was rescued from a lake in a disused Carmarthenshire quarry.

Luke Somerfield, from Ffairfach, Llandeilo, was pulled from the water at Cilyrychen Quarry in Llandybie.

Local people said although the site is closed and has a locked gate, it has been used for swimming and climbing.

Local councillor Anthony Jones says after official inquiries have ended, action is needed to deter visitors.

Luke was flown to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, on Wednesday afternoon, but died later.

Dyfed-Powys Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

We have to wait for the outcome of the investigation then have a look at it to see if we can do anything to deter people from going up to these particular areas”

"We have to wait for the outcome of the investigation then have a look at it to see if we can do anything to deter people from going up to these particular areas," said Mr Jones.

"Our thoughts are certainly with the family after this tragic incident."

Local AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas and MP Jonathan Edwards, whose constituency includes both Ffairfach and Llandybie, issued a joint statement saying they were "deeply saddened to hear the news of Luke's tragic death".

"It is always a sad to hear of such tragedies, but sadder still when it is so close to home," they said.

"Our sincere thoughts go out to Luke's family and friends."

David McClelland, executive director of Tarmac's west region, said the company's deepest sympathies were with family and friends of Luke.

Police are trying to establish the details of the incident, and they are working with other agencies to support Luke's family.
