A former musical director at Chetham's music school in Manchester has appeared in court accused of raping a student.

Michael Brewer, 67, of Birmingham, is charged with raped and indecent assault of a girl more than 30 years ago.

His ex-wife, Hilary, 67, of Rossendale, also appeared at Manchester City Magistrates' Court charged with rape and indecent assault.

Both were given conditional bail to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 28 June.

Mr Brewer, the artistic director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and his then wife were charged following a police investigation into allegations of historical sexual abuse.
