Swindon dog maul boy's injuries 'horrendous'
Published: 5th Jun 2012 14:13:36
The grandfather of a two-year-old boy attacked by a dog in Swindon said the boy looked as though he had been "thrown to a pack of wolves".
Keiron Guess lost an ear and part of his nose in the attack on Sunday and doctors say he may lose the sight in one eye.
Wiltshire Police said Keiron was found in a neighbour's garden in Swanage Walk after the attack.
His grandfather, Shaun Leonard, said the boy's injuries were "horrendous".
He said: "Every single part of his face was shredded. It was the most horrific thing I've ever seen.
"You cannot put into words the state of that boy's face."
Police said the owner of the dog, which was believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier, handed it to officers and it had been destroyed.
Keiron was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for emergency surgery, and was later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
He is currently in an induced coma and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Keiron's other grandfather, David Guess, 49, was also hurt in the attack and was treated for an arm injury.
Police said no-one had been arrested in connection with the attack.
The force confirmed it had attended the address last year and an officer had been bitten by a dog there.
A police spokeswoman said: "This animal was appropriately assessed at the time and was found not to be a dangerous dog breed. No further action was taken.
"Officers cannot confirm at this stage if the same dog that bit a police officer was the same as the one that has been destroyed after attacking the two-year-old boy."
