Diamond Jubilee: Chain of beacons to be lit across Wales
Published: 4th Jun 2012 09:37:12
Around 200 beacons will be lit across Wales on Monday night to mark the Queen's 60 year reign.
The Diamond Jubilee Beacons form part of a larger network in the UK, the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories.
In Wales, beacons will be lit on the summits of Snowdon, Pen-y-fan, the Great Orme in Conwy and even on Flat Holm Island in the Severn Estuary - the most southernly beacon in Wales.
Beacons will be lit from around 22:00 BST.
"We used it for the Golden Jubilee and for the Millennium and it is part of a string of beacons along the coast," said Llandudno Town councillor Terry Davies.
Red, white and blue
"Ours is the first to be lit and all the other beacons follow on when they see our light.
"It is reminiscent of how we used to send messages in the past."
In the chain across Wales, a beacon will be lit on top of Moel Famau in Mold - the highest peak in the Clwydian Range and the boundary between Flintshire and Denbighshire.
The beacon will be lit at the Jubilee Tower, built in 1810 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of King George III.
On Snowdon, members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and the dog rescue organisation Sarda Wales will join soldiers from the charity 'Walking with the Wounded who have just returned from an ascent on Everest to light a beacon summit.
Further south, a team of 80 air cadets and trainers will begin the ascent of Pen-y-fan in the Brecon Beacons at 19:00 BST carrying the beacon with then
In Newport, a large wooden beacon will be lit on Ridgeway at Allt-Yr-Yn in the city, while in Neath Port Talbot, Neath Castle will be illuminated in red, white and blue for the beacon to be lit there.
At Cardiff Castle the beacon will be lit on the Norman Keep.
But the 'most southerly beacon in Wales' will be lit on Flat Holm island in the Severn Estuary.
Wardens will light their beacon on the beach and they are hoping that it will be big enough to be seen from the south Wales coast.
Jubilee celebrations will continue with many events across Wales.
Anti-jubilee party
A boat parade is planned for Aberdyfi in Gwynedd, and parties are organised in fields, streets and on beaches.
In Flintshire, the town of Buckley is hosting live performances from local bands as well as a 50s fashion show and vintage vehicle rally on Monday.
A celebration will be staged at Powis Castle in Welshpool where visitors will be able to travel back to the year of accession in 1952, with vintage stalls and performers and competition tents with floral arrangements and vegetables.
Among the events in Carmarthenshire will be a ticket-only fireworks event with two marquees for guests at the Prince of Wales' home, Llwynywermod.
In Neath, a lantern parade will lead to the town's castle, before the beacon is lit.
Not everyone will be taking part in the jubilee celebrations. An anti-jubilee party rock night is taking place at The Globe, in Roath, Cardiff on Monday and other events have been planned and held around Wales.
