Jubilee: Back-up plans for West Midlands street parties

Contingency plans have been put in place as people in the West Midlands celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

The Big Picnic Lunch planned for the churchyard at Birmingham Cathedral has been moved indoors, but 150 people still turned up for the morning service, followed by the picnic.

Celebrations held in community centres and village halls have been taking place.

St Philip's Community Centre, Smethwick, attracted about 50 people.

The people, from many different nationalities, enjoyed face painting, music and international food at the event.

The weather meant a large-scale Big Lunch planned in Bradmore, Wolverhampton, had to be scaled down - but 150 people still managed to turn up to enjoy the day.

Organiser Julie Oakley said some activities had had to be cancelled but plenty of events were still going ahead.

"Most people still attempted to dress in red, white and blue," she said.

"They did have to put a water-proof on top though."

A fun day at Brunswick Park, in Wednesbury, was postponed until another day.
