Woman, 31, dies after van plunges down ravine on Rhigos Mountain
Published: 25th May 2012 18:53:23
A 31 year-old woman who was seriously injured in a crash on Rhigos mountain in Rhondda Cynon Taf has died in hospital.
The white Daihatsu van left the A4061 road at around 04:00 BST on Thursday and plunged 250m down a ravine.
The woman, from Dowlais, was travelling towards Treherbert.
A 24 year-old man is being treated at Prince Charles Hospital for less serious injuries. Police have appealed for witnesses.
The RAF had airlifted the woman to Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
South Wales Police are trying to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the incident.
They believe lorries were travelling in the opposite direction from Treherbert to Rhigos at around the same time.
More specifically, they would like the driver of what is believed to be a Vauxhall Astra, which may have been overtaken by the Daihatsu along the route, to come forward.
South Wales Police said anyone with information is urged to call the roads policing unit via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Sea King from Chivenor in Devon was called out at 05:00 BST because of the precarious position of the vehicle.
A mountain rescue team was also involved in the rescue.
The Welsh Ambulance Service said it sent a rapid response vehicle and three ambulances to the scene.
Fire crews from Treorchy, Tonypandy, Merthyr, Malpas and Barry were also called to the scene.
