Olympians Williams and Gardener to carry relay torch

Day four of the London 2012 torch relay will see Winter Olympics gold medal winner Amy Williams carry the flame.

Sprinter Jason Gardener, who won gold in the 4x100m relay in Athens in 2004, will carry the flame in Bath, as the torch travels from Taunton to Bristol.

Fellow bearer Eleanore Regan will need to control her excitement - as she is due to give birth on Wednesday.

The journey starts at 06:12BST and will take in Glastonbury and Wells Cathedral.

Glastonbury is the home of the popular music and performing arts festival attended by about 150,000 people each year, but its organisers decided not to host the event this year in part because of the Olympics.

The torch will also travel through the World Heritage Site of Bath and Wells Cathedral - the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

It will cover 108.05 miles, carried by 147 inspirational Torchbearers on its way to the Amphitheatre in Bristol, where a cauldron will be lit and the day's evening celebration will take place from 17:30 BST.

Former skeleton racer Ms Williams was the first British person for 30 years to win a gold medal in an individual event at the Winter Olympics when she won in Vancouver in 2010. She will carry the torch in Yeovil.

Gardener took the Athens 2004 4x100m gold medal along with Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis in a season's best of 38.07s.

Further along the day's route, Ms Whiting will carry the torch through Shepton Mallet, which is the home of England's oldest prison.

Awarded an MBE in 2008, Mrs Whiting ran the local Brownies for 32 years, worked for Age Concern for 20 years and Meals on Wheels for 17 years.

The torch will be "virtually" handed over to the next generation when torchbearer Ms Regan celebrates what could potentially be the penultimate day of her pregnancy.

Ms Regan, who will be carrying the flame through her hometown of Bath, runs charities and groups in Bristol and Africa.

On Monday Andy Seward was inspirational in his section of the relay when the 67-year-old, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease, got out of his wheelchair and walked the last few paces with the help of two police security guards.

The 70-day relay around the UK finishes at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July.

A total of 8,000 people will carry the flame on its 8,000 mile, 70-day journey to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on 27 July.

It is being borne by members of the public, young and old, who were nominated for their achievements, sporting contributions and community work.

Olympians and other VIPs will also carry the torch.

Each of the torchbearers will run with the flame for about 300m before lighting the next bearer's torch in a "kiss".

Officers from the Torch Security Team, co-ordinated by the Metropolitan Police, are accompanying the runners throughout the relay.
