New one-way road in Bristol is confusing drivers

A new one-way road in Bristol is causing chaos and confusion, according to local residents.

Belland Drive, in Whitchurch, was changed from a narrow two-way road to a one-way street on Monday.

But residents claim poor signage and a lack of notification has resulted in accidents, arguments and frustration.

Councillor Tim Kent, from Bristol City Council, said that "whenever you change a road layout it always takes a while for people to get used to it".

Bristol City Council instituted one-way traffic and parking restrictions on Belland Drive to prevent "persistent problems with collisions between vehicles reversing out of parking spaces".

But one resident said the new system had not been "very well signposted".

"We've had loads of people driving up the wrong way," she said.

"As far as I know there's been one accident and there's been one punch-up in the newsagents with two blokes - one going one way and one going the other."

Lib Dem councillor Kent, in charge of transport, agreed that signage was not "very good".

"Police were there during the middle of the week and over a few hours they did actually stop 40 people trying to enter the one-way system," he said.

"The signage at the bottom of Belland Drive off Whitchurch Lane - the no-entry signs are a bit high, a bit set back and a bit flat to the road and you'd have to be pretty observant to see them.

"So I'm talking to council officers about getting some additional signage put there to make it very clear."
