Hundreds of cows are due to be released on to Minchinhampton and Rodborough commons in Gloucestershire.

Nearly 400 animals will be put out to graze from 12 May, prompting warnings to motorists in the area to observe the 40mph speed limit.

Boards bearing the message "We're out now, kill your speed not us!" will be displayed at entrances to both commons.

Councillor Stan Waddington said grazing of cattle was essential to preserve the "unique ecology" of the commons.

"They represent someone's livelihood," he said.

"A significant number of cattle are going to be released and I would urge people to respect the cattle and to be especially careful."

Insp Jason Keates, from Gloucestershire Police, said: "Where animals and traffic mix there is always the potential for collisions.

"Hitting a cow would be like hitting a brick wall, it is just these brick walls have legs and can move out into the road.

"Keep your speed low and drive to an appropriate speed for the conditions."
