An Italian man who "joked" about carrying arms and explosives as he was about to board a flight from Cornwall has been released from police custody.

Passengers were waiting to board a flight from Newquay to London Gatwick on Saturday morning when the incident happened.

The 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making a bomb hoax.

Devon and Cornwall Police said he was given "strong words of advice" about his conduct.

A police spokesman said: "These comments were made in jest by the male not realising the seriousness of his actions."

Insp Andy Oliver told BBC News security staff at the airport had no option but to treat the matter seriously and search the man and his luggage until it could be proved he posed no threat.

"He was extremely apologetic and after some very strong words of advice about his conduct he was later released," he added.
