A ballot to decide Salford's first directly-elected mayor has gone to a head to head, after a first count failed to declare an outright winner.

Labour's Ian Stewart polled 20,663 votes, falling short of the 50% threshold required to be named mayor.

The next placed candidate Karen Garrido, leader of Salford's Conservative group, received 8,055 votes.

Second choice votes will now be counted to decide who will become mayor.

The turnout in the election was declared at 46,092, 26.1% of the Salford electorate.

Mr Stewart won 46% of the total votes cast, with Ms Garrido taking 18%.

The pair now go forward to a second round in which the second preference votes on the ballot papers of eliminated candidates are taken into consideration.
