Bristol votes on proposed elected mayor role
Published: 3rd May 2012 07:01:48
Bristol residents are heading to the polls to decide whether the city should be run by a directly-elected mayor.
The referendum is asking whether Bristol City Council should be run by an elected councillor, as happens now, or by a mayor elected by voters.
Polls close at 22:00 BST and votes will be counted on Friday morning.
Ten cities are holding similar referendums, with mayoral elections being held in London, Salford and Liverpool.
If Bristol votes in favour of having a mayor, an election will be held later this year.
