A man is critically ill after he was hit by a car that failed to stop in Manchester.

The 64-year-old was struck by the car on Turton Road in Openshaw, just after 01:00 BST.

He was left seriously injured in the road before being taken to hospital with multiple fractures and a head injury.

Police were told by witnesses that a dark-coloured estate car was seen driving away from the scene.

Greater Manchester Police believes the car will have damage at the front end and to its windscreen.

Sgt Brian Orr, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I am certain that the driver would have known that they were involved in a collision.

"A man has been left fighting for his life so it is vital that we speak to anyone with knowledge about this incident."

He appealed directly to the driver to come forward.

"I would also appeal to people to keep an eye out for the dark-coloured estate car and contact us if you spot it," he said.

"Perhaps you have noticed a neighbour's car with damage consistent with being involved in a collision, or work in a bodyshop or garage and have been asked to repair the damage."
