Italy policeman murder suspect arrested in London
Published: 27th Apr 2012 06:07:17
A murder suspect who has been wanted by police in Italy for three decades has been arrested after being seen in a post office queue in London.
Gianfranco Techegne, 49, has been sought by the Italian authorities since 1982 over an armed robbery in Naples in which a police officer was shot dead.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said he was held on Tuesday after being seen in a post office opposite Scotland Yard.
He was remanded in custody by Westminster magistrates on Wednesday.
The Met spokesman said that acting on intelligence, detectives from the force's extradition unit had spotted Gianfranco Techegne queuing up in the post office in Broadway.
He said officers had received a European Arrest Warrant from the Italian authorities last month.
Mr Techegne, of Old Pye Street, Westminster, was also wanted on suspicion of armed robbery and possession of firearms.
