Canoe instructor Grant Kinnie's death accidental
Published: 26th Apr 2012 20:54:26
A canoe instructor died trying to help people in his charge, an inquest in Cumbria has heard.
Grant Kinnie was trapped under his capsized canoe on the River Eamont, near Ullswater, in September 2011.
The 25-year-old, from Darlington, later died in hospital. An inquest jury has ruled a verdict of accidental death.
He was with a group from a school in Greater Manchester. A 14-year-old pupil was also trapped, but rescued and resuscitated by another instructor.
The inquest jury in Kendal heard that the school was licensed for adventurous activities and there had been no problems with equipment or the expedition.
Matthew Tinsley, a Health and Safety Executive inspector, said risk was inherent in the activity.
The coroner Ian Smith said that Mr Kinnie had paid with his life for trying to help people in his charge.
