Birmingham brewery site marked by plaque
Published: 26th Apr 2012 06:25:42
A plaque is being unveiled later in a student accommodation block to mark the area's close connection with brewing.
Davenports began brewing in Bath Road, Birmingham, in 1827 on the site of what is now part of the campus of University College Birmingham.
The plaque will be close to the 700 feet (213.36 metres) deep well dug by the brewery in 1928 to get fresh water.
The accommodation block and sports centre are called The Maltings to mark the brewing connection.
The plaque will contain information about the history of brewing on the site which ended in 1989.
The company began a "Beer at Home" service in 1904, and by 1935 had a fleet of 140 lorries making deliveries.
The owners of Davenports said they are currently working with land agents and surveyors to find a suitable site to bring the brewing process back into the city.
